This unpretentious town Kenhardt reminds us of the graciousness, hospitality and ‘gasvriendelikheid’ that have – almost imperceptibly in many Northern Cape towns – been supplanted by giant ore trucks, raucous chain stores and that most odious byproduct of ‘development’, i.e. litter.

Viewed as the hub of the Northern Karoo or Southern Green Kalahari, Kenhardt provides easy two-wheel drive access to the larger, more ‘clamour-ess’ towns fringing the Orange River, the eerily modern ‘ghost town’ of Putsonderwater, the glistening, sun-baked flats of Verneukpan, the ecoconsciouness-raising orange-and-red bed of the Rooiberg Dam, and the timeless, mystical peace of the large kokerboom forest just outside of town and several rock engravings  sites. www.boesmanland.co.za

As appropriately ‘nested’ or ‘nestled’ as it may be, the wide, litter-free streets of Kenhardt radiate outwards to draw that which is without within – evidence that ‘The Heart of Dorperland’ is as large, warm and all-embracing as the munificent livestock and radiant sun with which it is blessed.
